Sustainable Tissue Manufacturing

Sustainability in tissue attracts a lot of confident marketing and not much explanation. Buyers are increasingly asked to prefer the greener option, usually without being told what makes one option greener than another. This article is an attempt at the explanation, including the parts that are inconvenient.

We are a manufacturer, so treat this as a view from inside the industry rather than a neutral one. Where the honest answer is that it depends, we have said so rather than reaching for a slogan.

Recycled fibre is not automatically the greener choice

This is the claim most people are surprised by, so it is worth taking slowly.

Recycled fibre has real advantages. It diverts paper from waste and it avoids the harvesting of new fibre. But recycling is not free. Fibre gets shorter every time it is reprocessed, which means recycled tissue is generally weaker, so you need more of it to do the same job. Recovered paper also has to be cleaned, and de inking is a process that consumes water, energy and chemicals.

So the comparison is not recycled good, virgin bad. It is a set of tradeoffs: fibre length and strength against diverted waste, and de inking load against harvesting. For products where hygiene and strength matter, the answer is genuinely arguable. Anyone who tells you it is simple is selling something.

Where the impact really sits

If you want to know whether a tissue operation is run responsibly, fibre is only one part of the picture. Three others usually matter more than the wrapper suggests.

  • Water. Tissue making uses a lot of water. What separates operations is not whether they use it, but how much they recirculate and what condition it is in when it leaves.
  • Energy. Drying paper is energy intensive. It is one of the largest inputs in the process and one of the biggest levers on the footprint of the finished roll.
  • Waste and offcuts. Every process produces trim and reject. What matters is how much, and whether it is recovered or discarded.

A supplier who can talk about these in specifics is telling you more than one with a leaf printed on the pack.

Distance is part of the footprint

Tissue is light and bulky, which is an awkward combination. You are largely shipping air. That makes transport a meaningful share of the total impact of imported product, and it is the part that is easiest to overlook because it happened before the pallet reached you.

We manufacture in Kampala, which means our products are not carrying the emissions of an intercontinental journey before they reach a Ugandan customer. We think that is a genuine point in favour of local production, and we would rather make that specific argument than a vague one.

The most underrated lever is buying the right size

Here is the part that gets least attention and costs nothing.

A great deal of tissue is simply wasted. Not thrown away as obvious rubbish, but used unnecessarily, because the product was wrong for the job or the dispenser encouraged people to take more than they needed. Paper that is too thin gets used in larger quantities. A dispenser that releases a long sheet when a short one would do turns the difference into waste on every single use.

Reducing consumption is the most reliable environmental improvement available to most buyers, and it happens to reduce cost at the same time. That is a rare alignment and it is worth more than switching to a product with better packaging claims.

The greenest roll is the one that does the job with less of itself. Waste avoided beats waste recycled.

Packaging deserves a look

Wrap protects the product. In a humid climate it is doing real work, and removing it to look green would mean more damaged stock, which is worse for everyone. The useful questions are whether there is more packaging than the job requires, whether cases are sized so you are not shipping empty space, and whether cores and wrap can be recovered locally rather than in theory.

Questions worth asking any supplier

  • Where is this actually manufactured, and how far has it travelled to reach me?
  • What is the fibre, and why did you choose it for this product?
  • What happens to your process water?
  • What happens to your trim and reject?
  • Is the pack sized for the product, or for the shelf?
  • Can you help me use less of this rather than more?

That last one is the test. A supplier whose only interest is volume will not enjoy the question. It is also the question with the largest environmental answer.

What we would rather not do

We would rather not print a claim we cannot support. Sustainability in this industry has a language problem, where words like eco and green are applied liberally and mean very little on inspection.
